But part of what made him unique was that he was so awkward

Alberto Davila is another guy that should be worth mentioning. Not a hard puncher and can be hit from time to time but makes up for it with great ring IQ and boxing skills.

Holyfield and Walcott come to mind. But they were masters at the art of boxing in general they just weren’t particularly known for one thing or another just great fighters.

Ray Leonard was proficient in every area, he just had great speed which he couldn't help. As far as skills go he had it all though.

    Does Juan Manuel Marquez fit?

Great chin but could be hit and hurt, had good but not outstanding power, highly skilled but could be outboxed, good workrate but could be outworked. The totality of his attributes made him the fighter he was rather than any single thing.

JMM does sort of fit the description. However, he is a GREAT counterpuncher and a GREAT combination puncher which makes him stand out and also why he's considered a highly elite boxer. His great timing, counterpunching, and combinations to go along with his ring smarts and boxing skills outweigh his disadvantages IMO.

Curry, McCallum, and Sanchez were masters of counterpunching though, with Curry having great speed and power while McCallum and Sanchez had great chins. McCallum was also a great body puncher and Sanchez had great combination punching. All 3 had mastery in a few departments IMO.

True. At this level of scrutiny we rarely get any truly big names as most top fighters have something in there somewhere.

Probably the ultimate guy in this category to me would be Bobby Chacon.

Sean O’Grady also comes to mind.

Brian Mitchell was greater than the sum of his parts.

I think all fighters that would fall into this category have something outstanding about them, but it might be heart or toughness or willpower or conditioning or all of the above — things that seem a little more intangible or less easy to observe and quantify than power or speed or boxing ability. Most of them probably have above-average chins. Chacon seems to tick those boxes which is what made him exceptional even though there’s really no part of his game that to me stands out as exceptional.
