I've noticed something about some of my favorite fighters. Henry Armstrong, Rocky Marciano, Manny Pacquiao... All fighters who have incredible ability and who's boxing skills are IMO extremely underrated. Even Vitali Klitschko, whom many people say is successful because he is tough with a great chin, I am a fan of because I consider him highly skilled and subtly intelligent in the ring.

Who are other fighters whom, throughout history, people have said do not have great boxing skills and get by on their toughness and athleticism, yet who you believe have alot more skills than given credit for.

    Julio Cesar Chavez

At times, Marvin Hagler. More so by newbies. The "Hagler was a brawler" myth is a pet peeve of mine.

Someone once started a thread here asking for a fight where both fighters were highly skilled boxers. Someone suggested Duran/Hagler. The thread starter said that's not what they meant. But rather really skilled boxers. I interrupted to suggest they watch tennis. They asked if that's what I really wanted for the sport, that a fan watch another sport instead. I said yes. End anecdote.

Simon Brown had some really nice skills in his younger days. Nowadays he's generally thought of as the stalking power puncher he eventually became, but in his early career he was really nice to watch. Excellent boxer-puncher.

The brute slugger Gene Fullmer. Watch his two masterful boxing performances against Carmen Basilio. You'll have to rub your eyes to be sure it's Fullmer.

I was going to say Chavez also. Hagler also. I think Hagler punched harder than Chavez. But Chavez was a good boxer as he showed with Jose Luis Ramirez. Surprised me.

Most of the examples on this thread aren't examples of 'underrated skills'. Most of the examples are extremely physically talented and have lots of heart but not the most highly skilled. Thats not to say they have no skills, you can't survive in boxing with no skills, they just pale in comparison to the most skilled

How about Casamayor as an underrated stylist? Hopefully he can turn the clock back against Khan

Totally agree. The notion of underated skills begs the question, underated by who? By idiots. You could find an idiot to underate the skills of any fighter you care to mention. Anyone who knows boxing knows that all these guys were extremely skilled.

I will hold my hands up and admit a couple of years ago, I under-rated Hagler's skill big time.
