hey i know this must come up pretty often, but i was wondering which pro fighters would be best to study or at least observe when it comes to CONVENTIONAL skill and technique, i.e. not pacman for offence or floyd for defence or ali for footwork. kinda like JMM for combos (balance), or winky for peek-a-boo defence. i was also thinking nicolino locche for defence but maybe thats just wistful thinking.
General rules are take what you can from anyone but not athletic freaks like Roy Jones Jr. Don't overlook amateurs though, I've learn a lot from Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Cotto is a good one for current fighters. Good technique, good footwork - nothing too fancy. I really like Arguello, also a textbook guy - high guard, good head movement, stunning punching technique.
Bernard Hopkins is brilliantly technically sound. Hopkins vs. Trinidad is textbook. Gamboa vs. Mtwagwa for textbook boxer-mover. Mike Tyson for short guy tactics. Tommy Hearns for tall guy tactics. Ray Leonard for mover tactics. Tim Bradley for aggressor tactics. Floyd Mayweather or Roy Jones for counterpunching tactics, but don't try to mirror them, they depend on freakish talent more than technique.
good advice man , bad idea to turn up for sparring and trying to emulate roy jones jr unless you want your azz knocked out lol
Yea, there are plenty on youtube. He has great defence, sharp hands, great footwork. His 2008 Olympic final was fatastic.
Felix Trinidad is a good study in what to do in the ring. He has balance, good footwork, great defense and offense and trained to go the distance.
thanks everybody. just wondering if there was specifically a fighter to observe who keeps a good tight guard and throws tight punches, i.e. not swinging them excessively. almost all great pro fighters can afford to throw wide punches cos they are so fast, so fighters who keep it tight aren't so easy to find. katsidis is pretty good at keeping his punches tight and closing up well after throwing, but I don't want to observe him too much cos his offensive footwork is weird.
