Eckard Dagge?? The same guy who faught Rocky Mattioli?? Really a sad bit of news to hear.. Im suprised to hear this news mate.. His name has been obscured from my mind for a long time. R.I.P

 

Yep, the same. The second world champion from Germany. He also fought and beat an old Emile Griffith and Elisha Obed. He was quite a strange character and a real proletarian fighter. Actually, I just looked it up because I wasn´t that sure about it, he died in 2006 at age 58 - shortly after becoming clean.

 

Loewe.. What a complete tragedy, and a travesty considering his final attempt to cleanse himself. The fact you mentioned Elisha Obed consolidated the fact he is the same man who boxed Mattioli.. Death creates Legends, albeit, prematurely... I would like to learn soon enough how he lived his final decade... Obviously entrenched in the fight game, although, I would still assume he was a very troubled man. Im still a little shocked.. With any luck, he remained well respected in his home country and was afforded a worthy burial..

Well, after beeing fired by the Team of DM he worked as a trainer in the "Ritze", a bar in Hamburg with it´s own gym. He not only worked there as a trainer but also most of his free time drinking. He died broke and alone in a hospital. He isn´t really remembered over here, only by a few guys who are interested especially in German boxing and "lesser" fighters and his friends. Also he was always angered by the fact that he never got the attention 'Bubi' Scholz got while this guy never was a world champion but that´s due to Dagge´s difficult character and his problems with the media. At least he got quite a good funeral which was paid by the big German promoters Kohl and Sauerland and his former protegé Michaelchewski. Also nearly everbody who has a name in German boxing was there when he was buried.

 

Joe Louis became a heroin adict.

Louis was teatotal and refused lucrative offers to promote tobaco and alchohol products.

One day a porn actress who he had seduced gave him a shot while he was asleep and from then on he was hooked.
