You have different styles such as the pure boxer, swarmer, slugger, boxer puncher etc so what fighters you would say show varieties of each? For instance I consider Marciano a Hybrid between slugger and swarmer because he had the volume and output you see from a swarmer but also the one punch power you may witness from a Slugger. Dempsey seemed more like a boxer puncher who happened to play the role of a swarmer on plenty occasions seeing that unlike a lot of swarmers he had some good foot speed in his peak. That's just examples though so you can mention more if you like.
Well, I just watched a couple of Khakor Galaxy fights this morning, and was very impressed with his ability to go from inside brawler to outside technician. Salvador Sanchez also comes to mind. A swarming brawler early in his career, he became much more of a boxer/puncher during the time he was dominating some of the best fighters in the world.
Eder Jofre to me is the gold standard. Watch him against Medel- he's jabbing and moving and then he gets hit and plants his feet and unloads turning slugger. Ray Leonard could do anything. Emile Griffith would pressure guys like Paret and box guys who were stronger like Tiger. Outside of his granite chin and excellent stamina his versatility was his greatest feature.
great shout outs :good like sal sanchez as well, i haven't watched a lot of his earlier stuff so i'm more used to the surgical techician/puncher i'm all about duran in this thread. he perfected brawler, puncher, boxer, spoiler EVERYTHING and seemlessly transitioned between fights and between rounds if needed mike spinks was about as versatile as they come and dominated a ridiculously strong lhw era as a result qawi had VERY good boxing skills, even though he was primarily a brawler.
**** it, let's put hagler in here. i LOVE his boxing against sibson, nearly flawless combination of movement, jabbing and punches in bunches. then compare that with with his balls to the walls performance against hearns, then trench warfare when faced with mugabi. he did so many things, so well
Marco Antonio Barrera deserves a shout out. He was a beast in his younger years when he brawled/slugged it out but then evolved more into an incredible textbook technician, although he could still get into great exchanges. Very versatile fighter. I think Orlando Canizales was also capable of switching it up as a boxer, puncher, or brawler.
I should say this: Jimi Hendrix, Michelangelo, Albert Einstein, Gaius Appuleius Diocles (sorry, I'm a history major. Had to throw in the greatest chariot racer of ancient Rome)....Roberto Duran.. When You start talking about all time greatest, some names go without saying...
I think Tony Canzoneri comes to mind as the guy they always said would box the puncher and punch the boxer. I also think of Ezzard Charles in that vein. In recent times Chiquita Gonzalez did an amazing shift from banger to boxer in his 2nd and 3rd fights with Carbajal. I would also put Ruben Olivares in there. Always known as a banger, watch his rematch with Art Hafey. He turns matador.
agree with this one along with Barrera and Duran as mentioned before. Another you could say that goes without saying is the one and only Sugar Ray Robinson. The man could punch, box, and brawl when he had to
Including beating Leonard. I know, I'm gonna get blasted for that and I don't care. Marvin won that fight.
