I couldnt help but think about how Paul Williams could have done with his career if he stayed at 147, or even just 154. Moving to 160 and fighting Martinez ruined his career. In recent years.... De La Hoya was arrogant to think he could be a middle weight, and Mosley made a poor choice in going to 154. What other fighters made terrible career choices moving up to high? I mean some of these guys literally ****ed their careers up but not having respect for the higher weight classes and how it would affect them. Abraham comes to mind. Taylor as well. I know the money can be irresistable but.... Bernard Hopkins made a legacy by staying at the same weight, and went on to have a ton of success. Fighters rush far to quick to higher weight, at career ending results.

Weight had nothing to do with it. Paul Williams career was destined to be ruined because he has no defense and gets hit with loaded up shots. He just too unskilled. Quintana gave him a beating at WW long before Martinez.

But if a fighter stays at one weight people accuse him of not having the balls to step up and picking on smaller guys.

Weight has a lot to do with Paul Williams demise. Sure, his defense could be much much better. However their are not any welterweights that punch like Martinez, therefore he could have gotten away with his defensive flaws and his punches have significantly more impact at the weight. He would be Champion at welterweight right now if he had stayed IMO.

YOU seem to be a bit confused here... or maybe just forgot the fact that it was Williams who asked Martinez to go up in weigh from 154 to middle (160)..... on a relatively short notice also, if my mind doesn't fail.... Martinez would've owned Williams @ 154 as well, probably in an even better fashion, if that's possible. Williams was always a ko waiting to happen, just talk to one of his greatest fans, "SDFINEST"... and ask him how many times I told him so.... long b4 Martinez came to the pic. Williams is a very avg boxer, and he knows it.
Ohh, and no, @ 147 he would've had to fight Margo for a second time a while ago and Margarito would've obliterated that ass this time starting the fight a lot sooner, no doubt about that.... As far as having to fight Cotto @ 147 all I have to say is Cotto is better than Quintana in every single aspect... at the end of the day it was probably better for Williams to STAY AWAY FROM 147, maybe away from boxing at all by this time!!!

Weight made no difference except maybe you could argue he wouldn't have gotten KOed. He stills gets busted up and schooled by the top WW's just like a gatekeeper Quintana did to him.

I disagree, I think weight plays a big factor. Williams took alot of flush shots from quintana and wasn't hurt, he also took alot of shots (possibly with bricks) from margarito in the latter rounds and was not really hurt and definitely not ko'd. He came back and ko'd quintana, I think williams had a size and power advantage against 90% of ww's and combined with his workrate he could still be a ww champ. We all know that NO ww could have hit him as hard as martinez did.
