Briscoe was a one trick pony , and fought at one pace.
His "legendary " career is primarily built on the Philadelphia gym wars and the tough fights he gave Monzon , especially the 1st fight they had in Argentina in 1967 , where almost everyone who saw it thought he won.
But other than that , his career is exceptionally overrated.

 

Good opening for me to jump in with something I was struggling to find a way to say:

There have been some extremely good (and great) one-gear fighters who were relentless. They may be plodding ahead and they may not set a record for volume, but the opponent knew they were never going to really get breathing room as long as the guy was standing.

What I think Jim Lampley once called ‘metronome consistency.’ They may not rev the engine up to 1000 rpms, but it was running steady at their best rate and never seemed to waver.

I think of Alexis Arguello this way.
