Not the sports elite, but fighters who always gave it their all and gave everyone they fought absolute hell. I'm going to nominate lanky, 5'11 cuban defector Diosbelys Hurtado. Has some great wins against the likes of Randall Bailey, Emmanuel Augustus, Cosme Rivera, Daryl Tyson... And against the best fighters he fought, he troubled greatly. Knocked down Whitaker twice and was leading on the cards before being stopped in the 11th round. Knocked down Tzysu twice in the first. Dangerous fighter.
Yeah thats a good pick...though others just absolutely destroyed him aswell. Guys like Gerry Penalosa(if you dont consider him elite, you probably could) and prime Sam Soliman come to mind. Lovemore Ndou?
N'dou is a great choice. I remember John Garfield saying he was one of the most intimidating fighters he'd ever seen, that even his face had muscles. :blood Who ever destroyed Hurtado besides Vivian Harris when Hurtado was old and past it?
This gives me a great chance to mention Angel 'Robinson' Garcia again. Went the distance with a lot of good fighters, Roberto Duran for one - and Ismael Laguna. Knocked Laguna down 3 times and apparently should of won the decision. Went from town to town and always gave a fighter hell. Probably the best journeyman of all-time.
Yeah well Harris is the only guy isnt he, so other rather then others seems more appropriate...Im not so sure he was that past it, he had some of his better wins at that stage in his career.
If Clottey beats Cotto, then he won't fall into this category. (I think he will beat Cotto). But if Clottey loses to Cotto, then a few years from now we may say the same about him.
I believe the term is "a hard night for anyone". Glen Johnson comes first to mind of recent memory. Tony Galento was no pushover and was powerful enough and dirty enough to any and everyone fits. Jesse Ferguson gave not everyone but many a tougher night than they signed up for.
Kevin Finnegan: a 'cutey' with an iron chin and the determination to match. A very tough night is ahead.
Good call. Not a name you hear get mentioned often. Then again, lots of tough hombres were around back then and those guys sure didn't get the opportunities/benefits of fighting in a 4 current world titles scenario. It sure makes things a lot easier when the other top 3 fighters in your division are also champs and you don't have to fight them.
sakio bika comes to mind first, even in a losing effort against joe calzaghe, he gave joe hell and busted him up pretty good. Glen johnson.
