Orthopedic technician George Chaplin was an intelligent (and very well spoken), small (6'0," with a very nondescript physique), resourceful heavyweight from Baltimore who made life miserable for several top heavyweights. I thought he beat Greg Page both times they fought. He took Gerrie Coetzee and an undefeated Mike Dokes the distance. He took a DQ win after going nine rounds with Earnie Shavers, and he retired Duane Bobick on cuts after seven. A young David Bey stopped George in four on a TKO, and Gerry Cooney (rebounding from Holmes) produced a TKO in two, but everybody else who beat Chaplin had to go the distance to manage it. A solid 12 round competitor, he decisioned Larry Alexander and Wendell Bailey over that distance back to back after retiring Bobick. In avenging an earlier loss over stylish 6'4" contender Mike Koraniki and prevailing over the 6'3-1/2" power punching Alexander, he showed he could handle himself very well against modern sized superheavyweights, whether they be boxers or sluggers. (He also drew with 6'5" 280+ monster Jimmy Abbott in Abbott's South Africa.)
