Fighters who had their best achievements past their prime

Well for Sugar Ray Robinson its hard to say as he achieved great things at many stages of his glittering career. But i always thought moving up in weight when past his prime and emerging as the best middleweight of what some regard as a golden era was absolutely outstanding

 

Eder Jofre did some notable stuff at featherweight also, beating Legra and a faded Saldivar

 

This is my choice. Robinson past-prime accomplishments are stunning.

Roberto Duran's defeat of Iran Barkley is mind blowing.

Foreman is an obvious one.

 

Ali is big here obviously, Carmen Basilio beating Robinson not at his best weight, and therefore in a sense past his prime (no?)

Yeah, was Joey Giardello considered past his prime when he became champion? I think he might have been, but not 100%. I think its subjective as the likes of Hopkins and Moore it can be argued were in maybe not their primes later on in their careers but got better in different areas of their game

 

Archie Moore had plenty of notable wins at an advanced age.

When exactly is his considered peak period?

 

Hard to say, you get Moore fans saying he was pre-peak when Charles beat him three times, but he was past it when achieving his legendary light-heavyweight champion status!

 

Was Marc Johnson considered past it when he beat Fernando Montiel? Is he in hindsight?

Based on the film I've seen of him, I'd say he was at his best in the early 50's when he had his series with Joey Maxim and Harold Johnson.

He was still a remarkable fighter in the late 50's/early 60's, beating Yolande Pompey, Eddie Cotton, Yvon Durelle, Alejandro Lavorante, Giulio Rinaldi and drawing with future LHW champ Willie Pastrano. :good

Julio Cesar Chavez was past his best when he won the fight that gave him greatness (TaylorI).

As brilliant as he was in the 80s; Azumah Nelson had his best name wins in the 90s, as a 30/40 something.

Hagler was at least two years over the hill, when the defining Hearns fight came.
