Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson Thomas Hearns vs Roberto Duran Cassius Clay/Ali vs Sonny Liston Who else?
Antonio Tarver - Roy Jones maybe ?. Not too many I can think of from the top of my head but that and Pacquaio - Margarito are the first to come to mind although Pacquaiuo - Margarito carries some kinda weight in the context, as does Mosley - Margarito. TThinking of it now I wouldn't say either intimidated Margarito they just held so much resentment for him it shown in how they carried themselves leading upto and during the bouts. Very few fights qualify for this criteria, I'd say Tarver - Jones is one of them though.
Tyson was not intimidated by Lewis or Holyfield. He just got beat. Duran was not intimidated by Hearns. He just got beat. I don't think that you know what the word intimidated means.
Hearns pulled down Duran's baseball cap in a casino in front of other boxing fans in public, an act which Emmanuel Steward says would have gotten another fighter killed. Holyfield sparred with Tyson as a lightheavyweight at an amatuer tourniment and held his own, Tyson nearly cried at a press conference and bit Lewis on the leg, which Steward told Lewis, "you know he's scared of you now!". Learn some boxing, history, IGNORE DUMAS.
Holyfield Tyson 2 Holy looked at him in the pre-fight like Death Incarnate. Tyson's eyes dropped and were evasive. He definitely got punked, hard.
Here's one that doesn't get mentioned much....George Foreman and Michael Moorer. Moorer, as Hvy champ had the whole 'violent' KO persona going on...he talked some crazy stuff about wanting to rip out opponent's esophagus' out of their throats etc. Nothing we haven't heard before, but unusual for a boxing champion to say in public / on the record. In a press conference with Foreman, Moorer was wearing sunglasses indoors...Foreman made some comments about it and told him to take them off, he refused so Foreman told everyone that Moorer was obviously scared to look at him (Foreman) in the eye. Later, Moorer took his sunglasses off and Foreman said something like 'see boy, I told you you'd take those sunglasses off'... Teddy Atlas, Moorer's then trainer apparently recognized that Moorer was being intimidated so he rushed at George to try to break the tension or hold or something? That was the end of the press conference but Moorer had danced to Foreman's cues. Atlas explained it later but I don't his doing that would help any....Moorer himself knew what he felt and that he was doing things as a response to George's cues....nothing Atlas did could change that.
Teddy gets a lot of crap for a lot of things but he made George one of the best sandwiches George ever ate, he admitted later, to Atlas' credit. It was a Monte Cristo and he called it a Monte Fist-ow. For like because of boxing as a pun like. But George said that ish was amazing, ya'll.
One fighter whom seemed genuinely intimidated (it doesn’t fit the criteria) was over a talk show I watched James Toney talk down to both Benn and Eubank, Chris seemed absolutely distraught and was caught on his words and didn’t want to acknowledge the idea of fighting James lest his integrity be called into question.
I remember this. It was on a show broadcast just before Eubank and Benn's second fight. Chris told James that he was ignorant and he was looking forward to teaching him a lesson. Nigel informed Toney that he was as thick as two short planks of wood.
Benn wasn't intimidated & neither was Eubank IMO (well not fully). Eubank was more shook & disturbed mentally by Toney's words rather than intimidated, but he definitely wasn't confident.
There was an old story that circulated that Jack Sharkey was the first fighter ever to use the stare-down at the mid-ring instructions in the Dempsey fight. It was said he got right in Dempsey's face glaring. A never before used tactic - as most back then were gentlemen about the whole thing - but the story was it rattled Dempsey, who turned to his cormerman and asked, "What's he doing?" Of course the end results didn't reflect intimidation but the first several rounds were all Sharkey.
Boom! Now this is a great answer. Chris was definitely shook up. Benn would have flown over that day! Haha.
I like Chris but he is a sensitive sort a genuine man who seemed to honestly be shocked (somehow lol) that someone would talk about his Mum.
