A one off example would be Bruno's heroic losing effort against Lewis. Far and away his best ever performance, win or lose.

LOL, the good thing about that is that 50 years down the line many will of forgotten the circumstances of the draw decision, and it will just look like Chavez, who was arguably as much as 6 years and 17lbs past his best, got a draw with a man then being considered for the finest fighter on the planet.;)

I should have thought of mancini Arguello...he gave a great performance, and came up short against a great fighter....somehow you just knew after seeing this that he would one day be champ!

    :rofl

I had to do a double-take. FWIW, I scored both for Holmes, the Norton fight was probably closer.

Especially since they will have forgotten that Chavez was HIMSELF considered THE finest fighter on the planet at the time ;)

Chavez was past his best by then, but the spin will come because he will be considered the King of the Latino era, and will in the end be overrated. But I am not arguing, he was my favourite fighter between 87 and 93.:yep

Walcott vs Louis 1 & 2 as well as Marciano 1
Charles vs Marciano 1 far past his best yet put up a excellent effort and took it the distance.
Taylor vs Chavez 1 one of Meldricks best performances.

For my money, the all-time winner in the best loss category is Billy Conn, who is best known and most highly regarded by most folks for his first loss to Joe Louis.

Both fights were split decision victories for Holmes. So I guess according to you the judges that went against Holmes hadn't learned how to score fights and probably shouldn't be allowed to post here.
