Quitting is overrated. More fighters should feel comfortable quitting, imo. This idea someone should risk their life and limb to pull a victory out of the clutches of defeat is absurd.
Guess it depends on the circumstances. We all love the corrales vs castillo type wins or Danny Williams winning with a dislocated shoulder. The go out on your shirkd type victory. Somewhere I feel a fighter should always do that and its up to the corner to interfere. Like Futch with Frazier or Barrera vs Pac.
You can see in the Corner after the 8th round that his corner men were urging him to come out for the next round but he refused. Im a big fan of Chavez in his fighting days and actually went for him to beat De La Hoya in the rematch but it was very clear to me that he quit in his corner.
Ali did not quit against Holmes & Frazier did not quit against Ali - the corners stopped those fights, a corner stoppage does not = quitting, the fighter cannot override the corner's decision. I don't know how someone can look at smokin' Joe in Manilla, his face and head a busted-up lumpy mess, saying "No, no, no" to Eddie Futch.....and think 'quitter'.
