Immediately preceding Mancini-Ramirez, Arguello was interviewed at ringside about whether or not he had a rooting interest. Being the competitor he was, he very candidly admitted he wanted to make his first lightweight title defense against Jose in the worst way. Boom-Boom scuttled that with an astonishing 12 round shutout. From what I recall, Arguello-Ramirez was judged on a rounds basis [please correct me if I'm wrong], so Jose's knockdown of Alexis counted for only a single round won, rather than a 10-8 score. The consensus I've gathered is that many viewers feel Arguello did, in fact, shade it [just as Frazier was widely considered to have shaded Bonavena I on rounds], but the knockdown and dispute over the result was clearly taken as an affront by Alexis, and he was certainly eager for head to head redemption.
I had it 6-4 rounds to JLR but yes, it was scored as such and as aforementioned was extremely competitive and pretty fast-paved throughout. Arguello would've won over 15, I have no doubt. Not to detract from Ramirez or give Alexis a free pass at all.
Yeah, but he didn´t use it against Wlad....in part because he was a bit out of shape IMO, past of his best.....
