I think most fighters start off with rough beginnings. It is such a tough sport to be hit, I don't think anyone goes into it easily. I remember Darrin VanHorn being the fighting schoolboy or whatever he was called. And that was unique, but in the end he didn't stick to boxing that long. Even Ray Leonard who got the HBO job didn't want to box much since he had money that way and then handpicked at good times who he fought after 1982.. Hearns and Duran didn't have the options and they had to fight.
Interesting pick, while I'm not sure of his family finances or of any molesting madness like that...I know his father treated him like sh#t. Is that what you were referring to? Don't know if they ever mended their differences, or rather his father harsh treatment. Peterson brothers story- walking the streets at night as kids -every now and then slept in a station wagon. It seems nowadays the poor impoverished fighter seems to be overseas as opposed to the states. Here in America there is a different type of poverty, poor that didn't exist pre 1980s. Not to go political, but today, some of us have a t.v., heat in the winter, a fan in the summertime, can eat a burger for a dollar... and call themselves struggling or poor......that's not impoverished nor poor..as a result the poor kids of today IMO, just don't have the toughness of the poor kids pre 1960s. I think Benny Leonard knew more about squalor and poverty & mafia driven neighborhoods more so than an Adrian Broner type.
When Oscar was growing up his parents were so poor his only toys were kitchen utensils and his mom’s fishnet stockings.
Thanks, it was MAB not Morales. Ouma and before him--Azumah Nelson. Last time I was at IBHOF, that was all he talked about. How his whole nation made him feel compelled to fight to bring some dollars back- also like Pac. Side note, that is one of the reasons why I think Pac is near broke. Not just tax problems but his heart breaks for the squalor he knows his people lives in....now that he has a taste of the good life. I imagine he breaks his bank for his people, much like Azumah Nelson. So humbling of a person to listen to. Sounds like tears in his voice when he speaks of his country. (Azumah) Edison Miranda said all he knew was sleeping in sweat drenched heat with bugs, flies and then to come to the states and feel air conditioning for the first time. Water with ice. Things that my fellow Americans take for granted. We'd be ready to kill each other if we had to go a week with warm water, let alone no kool aid ---no mountain dew, LMAO!
Kovalev grew up in a very poor working class area in Chelyabinsk, an industrial city near the Ural mountains. Living in Russia was very tough in the 90s, full of violent crime, gangs and poverty. https://deadspin.com/sergey-kovalev-isnt-a-gangster-hes-russian-1789091258
Lomachenko got hit in the pubic area multiple times by Salido in his second pro fight, only to overcome it and win, but unfortunately even though Loma was the real winner, he got robbed by the judges. Also the officials should have deducted points from Salido for cheating. Andre Ward was getting outboxed by Kovalev in their second fight, and was behind on the scorecards of everyone besides the pathetic corrupt judges that destroy the sport. He overcame Kovalev’s offensive genius by hitting him repeatedly in the pubic area, and even managed to knock him out that way. A good comeback. Canelo was getting beat up by Golovkin, only to comeback on the scorecards and tie it, even though we all know the judges gifted Canelo a draw and the scorecards were rigged to begin with.
