Well, sadly it didn't happen bang in his prime when he needed them.

IMO, it started in the second half of the Mosley fight. Cotto was more economic with his output, knowing full well he couldn't bulldoze through everyone at Welter as he did at 140, and really the first time we saw what fighter he would become as he stepped it up to the highest echelons of 147lbs. Against Margarito, he didn't quite have the nuance to carry off his aggressive counter punching, and languished on the inside way too much and brawled.

Against Foreman and a faded Mayorga, yeah, he's looked much better. But Margo was when it all fell apart. As, ahem, great as Toni was that night, Miguelito could've won with ease, but just isn't capable of boxing consistently down the stretch. I think he made the necessary adjustments, my point was that he isn't quite good enough to pull it off.

Guess another reason why he's so loved by boxing fans. He always tries.

In that case - jpab19 - your not going anywhere fast - maybe start a thread about boxers who DID change there ways to further their career/won a big fight by boxing completely different etc?
I would but I cant handle the rejection if no-one else replies :|

all good points, but if cotto had learned to tie up his opponent off a punch and turned them, as well as using that jab more, he would have won that fight imo

Yep, I agree wholeheartedly. Tying Toni up in close rather than eating uppercuts all night, would've seen him survive, and probably win (Margo up on points at time of stoppage but most likely a different fight where Cottos classy boxing and cleaner shots would've won him the fight with ease)

If that's a topic that interests you, you start a thread on it.

This is more about the intangibles of a fighter, as I said in the OP, it's not like saying ''Ivan Calderon growing immense, mind-numbing power wouldn't have done him any harm'', and the people who have actually answered the topic have clearly been able to recognise this, all making very good points as to why they've chosen a specific fighter.

It's a concept that isn't difficult to grasp.

And I actually think there are a fair few fighters who were pretty much perfect at implementing their chosen style. Unless we want to figure out how they could've been say, 130-0 ;-)

Fair does bruv - I'll take back my :deal. I wont start the other post though, it would seem like a poor movie sequel and I'd have to pay you royalties.

His principles cost him that night. Even Manny's told him to stop with the machismo stuff and tie up if needed.

Saying that, Cotto found his level nonetheless IMO. Below the 'greats', but a very, very good fighter indeed. Close fights with other top 147lbers like Margo, Shane and Clottey are certainly nothing to be ashamed of, and nor is getting battered by arguably the greatest P4P fighter of the last 20 years. Agree with Mandanda, it's Cottos warrior spirit that caused some of his downfalls, but he was also far more suited to his aggressive stalking style, and just not quite capable of making the full transition to 'boxer-puncher'.

I guess we'll find out soon enough how much of an influence Manny has had, although, with another year out and his only competitive fights being equally bad drubbings as Miguel was dealt, how much does Margo have left?!

He had problems behind the scenes and wasn't living the life of a boxer. His team decided to cash in before he imploded and lost in a "nothing" fight.

Good post. People forget the beatings Margo's had and if i was Miguel i'd let rip to his head with regularity early doors. Will his face hold up?.. I know Cotto's started to wear Everlast i think for defensive reason's but Cleto Reyes would do a lovely job on one's fragile cheekbone.

As for Miguel your right he's had a top career and considering a near career ending car crash at start he's had a fine career and still can add to it slightly before hanging em up.
