Oh, and are you referring to two different "Tigers" above? One is Michalczewski, from Poland. Did you have another boxer in mind (a boxer from Ghana?)?

Kid Chocolate was just as famous in America and therefore globally, about 20 years earlier. The Cubans themselves would probably say Kid Charol as their original boxing legend, but he was based in South America.
Well, when it comes to the old Empires, I yield to anyone who knows what was going on. I believe France ruled Algeria and Cerdan was born in Sidi Bel-Abbes, Algeria. He first fought out of Casablanca, in French Morocco. To me, he would be a French-Algerian. I wouldn't consider Pancho Villa or Flash Elorde Americans, although the USA ruled the Philippines when they were born and when Villa fought. Fortunately, things are simpler now. The multinational corporations which run the world allow local "autonomy" on unimportant issues, with national leaders, even of great powers like the USA, being the de jure rulers but actually usually only de facto stooges of the multinationals.
Amir Khan was born in Bolton Lancashire UK and still lives there. Naseem Hamed was born in Sheffield Yorkshire UK and still lives there.
Interesting points. The last time "Tiger" fought as a Pole was back in the 1980s when he was receiving European Junior Championship honors. In 1991, he became European Champion while fighting for Germany. Even though Michalczewski only had four official professional bouts representing Poland (at the tail end of his career), I still very much liked when he stepped into the prizefighting ring wearing trunks of Poland's white-and-red national colors; I also liked how he entered the squared circle accompanied by the national flag, and eventually with the national anthem playing (for some of his final fights). Michalczewski and Andrew Golota do not particularly like each other, despite being teammates on the Polish national amateur squad back in the day. They were also born in the same year (1968) which is one of the best birth years in the history of Polish Boxing.
