A boxer certainly holds a distinction of being the first from a particular location to win a world title. The continent of Africa is very large and certainly many fine boxers have been born there. Arguably the greatest boxer to have ever come from Africa is Azumah Nelson.

The title of the thread is.

Fighters Who Put Their Country On The Boxing Map

Both Khan and Hamed's country is the UK.

    Name: Amir Khan
    Alias: 'King Khan'
    Birth Name: Amir Iqbal Khan
    Born: 1986-12-08 (Age:29)
    Birthplace: Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom
    Hometown: Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom

    Name: Naseem Hamed
    Alias: Prince
    Born: 1974-02-12
    Birthplace: Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom
    Hometown: Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom

YOU ARE A STUPID MAN AND WILL REMAIN SO BECAUSE YOU CANNOT BEAR TO BE CORRECTED OR EVER ADMIT THAT YOU ARE WRONG.

Three recent examples of this are you stating.
    1. Walcott was taller than Liston
2.Papp was the best middleweight in the 1960s who never won the title.
    3. Khan's country is Pakistan . Hamed's country is the Yemen.
ps Still waiting on the other thread for all the rated middleweights that Papp defeated.lol.

I think it is fair to say Naseem Hamed put Yemen on the boxing map.
Even if his country is UK, it was known that his parents were from Yemen and he was proud of his roots.
Most boxing fans had probably never heard of Yemen at that time.
Yemen was proud of Naseem Hamed. His face even appeared on postage stamps there.

in my personal experience hamed put yemen on the map full stop, so even if he is a sheffield fighter he def represented his roots.

Whatever Yemeni's think of Hamed it is not his country his country is the UK, more is the pity.

Yes, I agree, and I'd say a person can be aligned with as many countries as they please.

Thanks for this info. I would say Pietrzykowski had a profound impact on Polish amateur boxing, for sure (along with Jerzy Kulej), but fans' general lack of knowledge on amateur fight history prohibits guys like Kulej and Pietrzykowski from receiving the amount of credit they so richly deserve (Kulej especially as he is only one of 13 men to ever win at least two Olympic Gold Medals in boxing). That being said, the accomplishments of Golota (especially) and Adamek generally resonate with boxing fans when they hear "Poland". Michalczewski also, but as I said before, to a smaller extent only because to the casual fan, he is a German champion.

Fair, definitely a fair statement. You could most certainly pose such an argument. It really is all a matter of perspective. But without a doubt guys such as Tiger (who you mentioned), Nelson, etc. would all warrant a Top 5 on the Greatest African-born fighters of All Time list.

Really? Only 13 boxers have won at least 2 Olympic medals? I have no idea what the number is - but surely it must be higher than 13 (i would think!).

I meant only one of 13 males to win at least two Olympic Golds in boxing. So sorry for this glitch. This has been corrected.

Virgil Hill never squared off against Rocchigiani, it was Michalczewski who had the duology with Rocchigiani. I think you might have really meant Dariusz?
