Which are some examples of fighters who were good at a certain punch and yet rarely used it to full effect?

Oleksandyr Usyk is a good example of a guy who has a good lead hook (right hook) and yet he very rarely throws it with full force, instead using his left hand more and gently slapping with the right hook. He stunned both Joshua and Fury with the right hook at least once each but rarely uses it like that.

    Any other examples?

For quite a few years Cotto abandoned the left hook to the body. Once he teamed up with Freddie it was back

Mike Tyson, even in his prime, was known to sometimes abandon his jab, which was a very good tool that helped him get inside of the opponent's reach. His trainers used to remind him of it a lot of times between the rounds.

Ken Norton threw an absolutely lethal overhand right. It was fast and hard. He used it well against Ali in their 3rd fight, KO'd Bobick with it and I believe I recall him using it well against Young and Holmes but haven't seen those bouts in awhile. In later years such as against Ledoux, not so much. Maybe once or twice. But I do realize this was a punch that really had some oomph and really took a lot out of him when he used it. Clearly as he aged he just couldn't do it much anymore.

Lewis had a really good left hook at some point. Then he randomly stopped throwing it when he transitioned to Kronk-Style.

Larry Holmes was a great body puncher when he chose to go downstairs, but he was never an all-out ‘attack-the-body’ guy. Mostly a shot here, a shot there, but some of them were pretty brutal when he did.

Bernard Hopkins landed 7 jabs against Tarver and 9 against Wright. Whenever he fought soutpaws, he completely abandoned the left jab which usually is one of his greatest weapons. He would simply throw lead right hands, tie up and walk them back to the ropes and bust them with body shots and uppercuts on the inside.

Stopped using it > getting rid of Davenport and taking on Correa. Never ever understood why Correa was selected as a trainer. But with Davenport, Lennox had a nice left hook he used from time to time. Effective, but still under utilized but it was something they were working on and you could see the improvement.

    RJJ using his jab
Ali had a very good jab to the body pre-exile - hardly went to the body with any conviction for the vast majority of his career.
Benn had better defensive reflexes than he often showed.

Holmes compared Nortons power to Tyson… Holmes is Holmes but I always felt KN could really punch.

It’s not that he never used it, he did, and it was damn good when he did employ it, but Napoles’ right hand was used quite sparingly. The left was a damn cutlass, used every which way, but the right was as much a vieled threat as a real weapon.

Holmes also said he beat a prime Muhammad Ali so hard to take anything he does seriously. But i agree that Ken could hit.

Took a century to see post Kittikasem 2 Arbachakov actually throwing his left hook.
