Well it's a very big deal. It eliminates a lot of the competition pool if you only have to fight white men

It was the same in baseball pre 1947

Are we criticising them in terms of their moral stance, or the detriment that it had to their legacy?

These are different and sometimes contradictory things.

Should the fighters be blamed as strongly or as frequently as they are on here it's beginning to feel a bit like a witch hunt . perhaps the promoters/area governing bodies should get more criticism than the fighters also the political atmosphere of the time should be taken into consideration.

That's why Janitors question is important. We can all have different opinions about moral judgment based on our personal values and our interpretations of who was at fault and who has legitimate excuses. But at the end of the day, whether it was morally understandable or not, some men failed to fight some of their most formidable potential opponents and that affects a fighter's legacy, period. (Especially I'd there is strong reason to believe that some of those avoided opponents likely would have beaten them)

The biggest fight that the colour line denied us was probably Tommy Ryan vs Barbados Joe Walcott.

That would have settled the question over who was the GOAT at welterweight, until the ray Robinson era.

Jack Dillon vs Jeff Clark would have been sweet!
