Martin was hyped before he lost to Johnson, so no issue there.

McVea continued to be hyped, even after he lost to Johnson.

People were saying "this guy is big and can hit, he might give Jeffries a fight".

To the bigger picture, how much does Jeffries' record suffer for not having met the 1900-1905 versions of McVea, Martin and Johnson?
