Which fighters do you know of, that made sparring as the main part of their training.
Two come to my mind. James toney, and chris arreola. Both do next to no running, and the rest is basic gym (bagwork/padwork, and calisthenics etc) work and maybe some technique work.

gyms in which there is alot of sparring tend to produce successful fighters imo.
remember the kronk gym? Even the wildcard, not only do they do many rounds but its full on.

i heard oscar de la hoya when he fought mayorga, sparred 300 rounds, no wonder he wasnt rusty.

which fighters do you know who mainly spar and are successful.

James Toney was the first to come to mind.

Terry Norris was known for doing a lot of sparring, which probably explains his slurred speech nowadays.:-((

I personally watched Terry go over 20 rounds (sparring) one day in Tocco's.
He then spent about 45 minutes doing sit ups. He didn't even look tired.

Another was JCC. (at GG's Vegas late 80's)... He'd spend a lot of time warming up then seemingly endless rounds of sparing.

According to a bunch of people, Jorge Paez did little to no roadwork and just sparred for the majority of his career.

Can anyone think of a major fighter who RARELY sparred for fights?

Cool. I heard Norris went really hard at it in sparring. Also that he was a real nice guy until that bell rang, then the sadist in him came out.

I don't know about regularly, but I remember Manny Steward saying that for the rematch with Riddick Bowe, he had Evander Holyfield focus more on other things (footwork, double jabbing, in and out movement and rhythm) instead of sparring.

Lazy *******s do mainly sparring and cut out the other training that actually improves performance. You need good sparring and hard sparring but that alone will limit performance a load

Steve Collins mainly did sparring at the end of his career

Calzaghe iddn't do any towards the end of his career because of his hands.

In his last fight when he was knocked out Enzo Macarinelli didn't bother doing any sparring beforehand either. :nut
