I have heard this as well in articles as well as interviews from people who knew Toney. He was a gym rat, but not a fit rat. He preferred building up his timing, reflexes, and stamina with actual fighting--which makes sense, but too much of it is damaging to your body. The evidence is Toney's slurred speech and worse motor skills despite being a defensive fighter. As for hitting the speed bag, he did do that on at least a few occasions. In a promo commercial leading up to his fight with Randy Cotoure he is seen hitting a speed bag. I don't think he does much else though. His body wouldn't be that flabby if he did tons of road work or strength training. Freddie Roach once said "Toney is the most talented fighter in the world, but he's also the laziest". Makes sense. In my years working in various gyms, the naturally skilled guys tended to be the least disciplined.
That's actually ingenious. It's not really practical nowadays since people tend to fight no more than 2-3x a year, sometimes less. No wonder he had so many fights on his record. Just beat up your sparring partner and get paid for it lol.
Yep sometimes he would even carry guys later because he was working on something or not looking to hurt guys to bad.
On the subject of sparring, I have ( and I am sure you have ) seen more action and more punches thrown in a spar session than some fights. in fact I you tube fighters sessions on a regular basis, we have all read accounts of how hard and unforgiving some champs are when undergoing that part of there training, for me the most terryfinening ( sic) was Foreman !!! stalking his paid help, with that homicidial look on his face, then letting loose those crunching body blows, with not an ounce of pity, is something to behold.
I saw Melchor Cob Castro and Humberto Chiquita Gonzalez spar on a couple of occasions and they went to war. I saw them fight each other twice for world titles and the fights were less than exciting. They were close friends and often helped one another prepare for fights. When they sparred, they got after it.
Another action packed spar > Froch/ Eubanks , for me Eubanks more than holds his own, thought he would get hurt, but no, he was up for it, and gave Froch some thing to think about.
Central Coast slugger Troy Waters truly evil father Ces made him spar 30 rd the day before his world title shot against Rosi. RIP Troy Waters a gentleman who deserved a better outcome in life.
