Like most top amateur heavyweights during the 80's, Marvis Frazier fought with a style that looked similar to Ali's style, his style changed during his transition to the pro game so he could look more like Joe in the ring and that was pretty much his downfall as a pro, I'm not saying he was beating Tyson or Holmes with his old style but it was better suited for him.

Yea this is true. Marvis would have beat some of those 80s contenders if he had been able to fight his own style. Also not fought Homes in his 11th fight.

Hamed was always off balance after his shots and Povetkin doesn`t set his shots up with the jab, that would have nothing to do with Atlas.

I saw on youtube some pundit saying De La Hoya ran against Trinidad in the last couple of rounds though, I think it was the former youtuber Wilson Kayden.

Povetkin beat Chambers, who was a top rated heavyweight. He then toiled away for a couple years after signing up with Atlas. Atlas kept publicly repeatedly stating that he was "a work in progress" and not ready to step up or something to that effect. He then ditched Atlas and started fighting better opposition again with pretty good results. I can't be sure if Atlas restricted him from facing good fighters, but that's the public perception he put out there.

No I was never a Cooney fan. Holmes was my guy during that time period.
What I'm saying is in hindsight looking back Cooney had the physical tools what he was lacking was between his ears.
Valle was a big part of that by telling his managers to keep turning down fights against good fighters which must have really hurt Cooneys confidence.

Not sure Joe Frazier counts as a "well known trainer," but Bert Cooper also complained about Joe as a trainer--blames Joe for forcing a bad style on him that doomed him against Carl Williams, who Cooper feels was "too big." Might have been sour grapes though...

Gil Clancy was a great boxing man but the worst thing that ever happened to George Foreman! His idea was to shorten up George's left hook so he brought his feet too close together with the result being Foreman lost all his weight into his punches by his natural gait, his right uppercut went sideways, his stun producing jab became nothing but show and he stumbled every time he tried to move forward quickly. The first time we really noticed this was in his fight against Dino Dennis and it only got worse after that. Thankfully the come-backing Foreman lost all of Gil's wrong teaching for him.

His style changed when Joe decided to take over training him instead of George Benton who did a very good job with Marvis until Joe took over.

Remember Clancy in dhy corner as assistant or something but he just seem way out of his element n clashing with Joel ( dlhy's brother) it all just seemed cringy. But dlhy would have been a nightmare to work for.
Interestingly I think it was Clancy saying Larry Holmes wouldn't go far or something.
