I'm specifically thinking about Ali in Zaire who took some horrific bodyshots from Foreman, and Duran against Barkley, in which Bernstein and Clancey spend 3/4's of the fight saying those bodyshots Barkley was landing would pay dividends in the late rounds. The problem is they didn't.

Then of course there's boxing wars, such as

    Marquez/ Vasquez
    Gatti/ Ward
    Ali/ Frazier
    Robinson/ LaMotta
    Robinson/ Basilio
    Barrera/ Morales
    Corrales/ Castillo
    Hagler/ Hearns
    Lewis/Vitali
    Foreman/Lyle

If you broke it down to fighters, who would be on a top 10 list of fighters who could both absorb punishment and win fights.

So far I have Ali, Robinson, Duran, Gatti (?), Chacon, Rocky Graziano, Tony Zale, Marciano, Walker, Greb, but there could very well be 4-5 fighters I've missed.

    Bat Nelson is the standout.

He was in fights with punch outputs per round, that would have looked good in a lightweight fight today, that lasted for 40+ rounds.

He ended up a basket case.

Anybody who does not feel an element of romanticism about that era doesn’t have a heart, and anybody who wants it back doesn’t have a brain.

...is that the chill wind of predictability blowing its way down the springladen corridors of your mind, young man?

After moving to Sacramento, Bobby Chacon won bouts in which he took a tremendous amount of brutal punishment.

Matthew Saad Muhammad seemed to take a huge amount of brutal punishment in bouts, win or lose.

I don't know if Wayne McCullough won many bouts after becoming badly shopworn, but he was a virtual punching bag afterwards.
