Name some fighters you feel had solid power that they managed to take with them to the higher weight divisions
Arguello came up from featherweight to one-punch Rooney and Costello (sounds like a comedy team) at 140. Kevin was 19-1 at the time, and would retire at 21-4-1. A pretty tough customer, all four career defeats were by stoppage, but Alexis was the only one who ever laid him out like that for the count. (A count to 100 probably could have been reached after that bomb.) He was looking dreadful against Costello, until a single big right floored Billy, a shot he could not recover from. Costello was 31-1-0 at the time, and would go 9-0-0 to finish his career. The meaningful portion of Arguello's career ended with this one, as he was then forced into retirement after being diagnosed with a heart ailment, but he still looked as though he could knock out any active JWW not named Pryor or Mamby.
Hearns and Robinson would be the obvious ones. I think Duran could still hit as far up as middleweight he just couldnt catch guys like he once did. Trinidad took his power up from `47 and was still able to stretch guys at `60. If he could hit you he could beat you. Jimmy McClarnin the Baby Faced Assassian. He was the baddest man ever to walk the face of this Earth. I think he started at Flyweight and was KOing fighters at Welterweight.
And Canzi had competed for the Bantamweight Title. Their first match (on youtube) shows them staggering the hell out of each other. Canzi was outweighed by about seven pounds (136-1/2 to 143), but prevailed 8-2 on all three cards for his final major win. Both of them were indeed far harder punchers than knockout percentages of 25% (Canzi) and 30% (Jimmy) might suggest, but fortunately we have the footage which displays their true power.
Agreed. Canzoneri's K.O% is one of the more misleading IMO. Speaking of McLarnin, he gets more respect as a hitter. His K.O of YCIII remains an intimidating achievement.
Yeah I figured some would pick the obvious ones like Robinson and Hearns I'll check out the other names as well. I also felt Ezzard Charles managed to take some power with him from middleweight all the way to the Heavyweights. Archie more as well because he had some knockouts over some of the heavyweight contenders though many agree his best was as a lightheavyweight champion. Joe Barbados Walcott was a welterweight but on many accounts has been said to have some quality knockouts that go as far as the heavyweights(being back then it was normal for lower weight classes to go up and take on the higher weight divisions)
Hearns and Duran and Arguello all did. There was some decline, but they still could knock guys out if they landed. Julian Jackson moved up only one division, but he carried it well. In someways I thought Chavez power increased as from 130 to 140, yet his defense went down.
