But not necessarily for thinking...A line from Fritzie Zivic in Rosenfeld's book on Charley Burley. Who comes to mind for you? (Besides Hagler)...
Pedroza. Man, that guy was good at every illegal tactic wasn't he? Headbutt the guy after a thumb or lowblow. but the guy was tough as nails which often gets overlooked.
Some good picks so far. Pedroza was something else...a Pedroza/Sandy Saddler meeting would have been interesting. Back in the day, I wanted to see a Pedroza/Sanchez unification fight in the worst way...
Nigel Benn and Kabary Salem. Benn nearly killed a man in the ring with headbutts and Salem did! Mike Tyson is one that people don't mention so much. Many of the collisions with Holyfield were caused by Tyson intentionally trying to headbutt him. The stronger head just happened to win those exchanges.
Armstrong used to dig his head low into his opponents chest and drive them back, Duran could be dirty as hell with his head, just watch the Buchanan fight. Saddler, Zivic, Battling Nelson are other dirty fighters. Fireman Jim Flynn apparently used to do flying head butts and Tony Galento once blamed a loss because he couldn't head butt his opponent. Mysterious Billy Smith got DQ'd a lot in an era where that didn't happen often. I'm not sure if it was head butts or low blows that was Smith's speciality. Probably both.
Dude...for my birthday actually! A looooong overdue read for me...Also got a onsite program for Mantequilla Napoles and Curtis Cokes. Was pretty hyped about it.
:happyA favorite fight of mine. I remember picking up the Ring magazine with that fight on the cover.
Kabary Salem was ridiculous.most of these guys would leave the head hanging out to do damage when they stepped in, push it against the other guys face inside etc With the eye to opening up cuts and frustrating mostly, but Salem actually launched multiple full force headbutts in every single fight, as well as constantly doing all the other rough stuff.
