This is a hard thing to do because most of the boxing stars are current or former world champs, but let's think of some recent names who were still able to achieve star or superstar status w/out a belt around their waist. Maybe give a reason why. I'll start:
    Gerry Cooney
    Vilomar Fernandez

Quarry, Bonavena, in the UK Herol Graham, Kirkland Laing, Colin Jones.

    Golota.

Also in the UK, Billy Walker, 1960's British heavyweight was well-known.

Jack Doyle the 1930's Irish heavyweight was a big star in his day.

My thought also, you beat me too it. Davis was a Regular on CBS boxing in the early-mid 80's.

Well in a strange sort of way Earnie Shavers was more famous in boxing history than a lot of guys who won titles, is that stardom?

I know this might not want to be what you guys want to here, but Ron Lyle was in high demand in the early to mid 70s.

David Tua was a pretty good draw for a guy that never held one of the recognized belt. He could sell some tickets for sure.

Chuvalo was always a big draw. Never in a dull fight.
