Julian Jackson was avoided by James Toney, Roy Jones, and even McCallum. (Jackson had improved since the first fight, and called for a rematch constantly. He also called out James Toney at every fight. When a commentator brought up Jackson's name to Toney, James immediately changed the subject.) It wasn't until a few years (and eye surgery) later that Gerald McClellan was brave enough to step up to the plate.

Archie Moore was quite avoided in his pre title years IMO.

I believe Napoles was hugely avoided pre title days.....which is why they were pre title days.

A big part of Moore not getting a shot for a while, is that he wasn't even seen as the most deserving until 1949. He definitely was avoided, but he was second in line for a lot of it. Lesnevich didn't want anybody from that era

No ****. I reference that in my post. But Jackson improved after their first fight while McCallum started to slip. Jackson wanted a chance at redemption. McCallum wanted no part of it.

Well, I remember that whole scene as it unfolded in real time. Jackson called out Toney and McCallum after every fight. His fights were broadcast on Showtime. I only have them on VHS and can't upload them. I am not saying that Jackson definitely beats those two. But, he looked devastating for a few years after his fight with McCallum in 86 (which was a pretty quick stoppage by the ref anyway), and they wanted no part of him. Jackson had the WBC belt and called to unify, so, there was really no excuse why he wasn't worthy of the fight. And, who wouldn't relish the chance to watch Jackson face off against either of those two men? Fireworks are all but guaranteed.
