Fighters are given styles predicated on their physical strengths and weaknesses. For example tall lanky fighters are given a style that keeps opponents at the end of straight punches, and are usually told to clinch or manuever out of infighting. Short and stocky are told to keep their head moving and to get inside doing damage with hooks and uppers. So what fighters would say were given the wrong style based upon their physical attributes. The first person that comes to mind for me is Diego Corrales. He never fought tall for an extended amount of time in a fight.
I dont know about Corrales being given the wrong style but he definetly prefered fighting on the inside rather than the outside where it didnt suit him
While I agree that Corrales never fought tall, I wouldn't say he was "given the wrong style" because he excelled at infighting and won numerous titles(and legions of fans) with it. One example that may raise a few eyebrows is Ken Norton... He's an atg who had a lot of success against great fighters but he qualifies as someone who didn't use his height or reach as much as he could have or should have.
Norton is not an atg. Paul Williams is a good and recent example for this. Perhaps Jeffries too, fighting out of a crouch despite beeing bigger than his opponents.
He just didnt have the power to fight like that. He became completely ineffective when he moved up in weight and again when he moved back down and started to slow. Id have him boxing more from the outside, he had decent handspeed.
D'Amatos peek a boo wasn't really right for jose torres...though he did still have damn good success, one of the reasons why cus is not an all time great trainer...didn't really modify what he taught. Wlad klitschko use to try to do allot of high pressure fighting..and he use to actually bob and weave. He got away from it under steward...but I do recall in the first peter fight wlad ducking punches...which is not a good idea (I always though if he ever fought Valuev he would do that allot though...). Finally of course paul williams...nuff said on him
You said fighters who were ''given the wrong style'' by that i thought u meant his trainers had him trained to fight in close whch they didnt. He still was able to have some success fighting in close but just not as much as he could have had on the outside
oh ok. so that wasn't given, that was just something he decided to resort to during bouts? maybe i should've just said "fought with the wrong style"
Diaz seemed to have a good work ethic, but i have trouble seeing him being very effective from the outside with his stubby build. he lacks head movement and his punch technique is horrible, that may be one reason why he hasn't had success versus better opposition.
Yep. Paul Williams wouldn't make a good boxer type though, he's just too ****ing stupid. I also think Cotto with Emmanuel Steward is a bad mix.
Marvis Frazier is the first name that came to my mind. In the amateurs he was more of a boxer, but when he went pro and was trained by his dad he tried to adopt Joe's style. I think he would've been more successful had he boxed rather than brawled.
