Every fighter, even the very greatest of them, has a style or fighter they come up against that they struggle with. What are some good examples of fighters who could make the necessary adjustments in rematches to avenge previous blemishes on their records or erase any doubt about their superiority over another fighter?
Louis, Ali (except of 3rd Norton fight), Holyfield (except of 3rd Bowe fight), Hagler, Wlad Wlad's rematches: Everett Martin - WUD and TKO8 Chris Byrd - WUD and TKO7 Lamon Brewster - LTKO5 and WTKO6 Samuel Peter - WUD and KO10 Tony Thompson - KO11 (and Thompson won some rounds) and KO6 in a one-sided fights
Miguel Canto: - Had a draw and a split-decision win in two ten-rounders against Ignacio Espinal before beating him in a wide, uncontested UD when Espinal challenged for the title (one of the two ten-rounders is controversial in the DR, although I don't remember which) - Lost his first world title fight to Betulio Gonzalez but then defeated Gonzalez in two subsequent championship fights - Went 3-0 against Shoji Oguma, but the first win (MD) was extremely close, the second (SD) was controversial enough to necessitate a rematch, and the third was close but a UD win that no one had a problem with - Canto had a fairly wide UD win against Martin Vargas, but somehow this led to a rematch in Chile (I've read that there was a rematch clause in the contract for the first fight, but it sounds strange for the challenger to be guaranteed this) with the same result; anyway, lots of people in Chile think that Vargas won the first fight, but the second was a clear victory - Was widely beaten for the title by Chan-Hee Park, but was able to eke out a draw in the rematch, which legend has it was a poor decision against Canto - Avenged his losses to Tarcisio Gomez and Gabriel Bernal, although the Bernal one had some people calling for Canto to retire and might have been a hometown decision His trainer compared him to the aforementioned Joe Louis and said that Canto always learned from the first fight and developed new tactics for the second. With the scarcity of Canto footage it's hard to say how accurate this is, but it's also hard to say how accurate some of the claims about the controversial decisions are. The first Vargas fight is one that is on YouTube, and I thought that Canto won it.
Emile Griffith is by far the king of the rematch: Gaspar Ortega Benny Paret Denny Moyer Jorge Fernandez Luis Rodriguez Ralph Dupas Manuel Gonzalez Joey Archer Nino Benvenuti Andy Heilman Stanley Hayward Dick Tiger Ernie Lopez and yes, even Carlos Monzon No one can say they've gone that far. Beating a lot of them after losing to them, or beating them more decisively than he did the first time.
Sugar Ray Robinson Joe Louis Lennox Lewis Emile Griffith Muhammad Ali Miguel Canto Wladimir Klitschko Pernell Whitaker Juan Manuel Marquez Juan Francisco Estrada
I think Gavilan could make a good run for Griffith's "crown": Malacara 2 Buster Tyler 2 Williams 2-3 Graham 2-4 Hairston 2 Ciarlo 2-3 Bratton 3 Livio Minelli 2 also stopped Pruden & Janiro in rematches after decisioning them the 1st times.
