I am interested in hearing some of your examples of fighters who were clearly past their prime who, somehow or another, managed to muster up one final prime-like effort towards the end of their careers.

Very interested in seeing some of your suggestions.

Well if you calling hitting the other fighter in the balls down for a 10 count after which you had been getting humiliated for 6 rounds turning the clocks back for one final time......then perhaps I should change my judgement on this subject. sharkey was on the ground in immense pain grabbing his balls while being counted out.

I remember Sharkey got low blowed, dropped his hands to complain to the ref and got clocked with a KO shot.

he dropped his hands so he could grab his balls because he was in so much pain.....he was already going down in alot of pain from the ball shots when dempsey suckered him with left hook.

He didn't exactly look prime in there, but it was impressive how Holmes willed himself to a great performance against Michael Spinks in the rematch and it was shameful that the judges didn't acknowledge it.

Could probably mention Holmes in the Mercer fight too, but I don't think he looked anything near prime there, and that fight showcased Mercer's flaws more than Larry's resurgence imo.

Leonard put up an inspired effort against Hagler of course. I didn't have him winning, but it was impressive as hell in any respect to see him do what he did that night.

Willie Pep in the second Saddler fight belongs here.

I think Pernell Whitaker looked excellent against DLH after looking ordinary for a good 2 years beforehand. He worked like no other time to get in shape for that fight and his reflexes were extremely sharp. He didn't get off with his punches like he used to, but he did, as he himself put it "come out and express the Pernell Whitaker of old".

Unreal, i thought about mentioning both of these. The only reson i didn't mention Spinks is because i believe if Holmes took him seriously the first time and didn't come in so flat and pisspoor we would have seen a similar fight in the initial encounter. I too believe Holmes beat him handily in the rematch.
