Even a cleanskin & theoretical success story like Larry Holmes is one of the most bitter, unlikeable SOB’s you could ever meet. LOL that’s Boxing.
Keep in mind that I said "Scum", I ain't just talking about guys that turn up unlikeable or become sour, I'm talking about really deplorable people.
He might not be as bad as the others, but he was a horrible abuser. His kids have talked casually about how he used to just beat his wife Edna Mae, and they caught some beatings too. Edna Mae had 5 miscarriages, and Ray Jr. thinks it’s because of the constant beatings she took from him. He beat and raped his GF for coming home late from a concert. He beat her so bad that it was originally an attempted murder charge.
Apparently Frank Bruno also assaulted his wife on multiple occasions after retiring, and Jack Dempsey at one time became a pimp, and raped many young girls.
If you love the sport. You shouldn't want to see anyone hurt because of it, just my opinion. I've heard some of the stories about McClellan behavior away from the ring. And If someone had popped a cap in his ass like what happened too another bully and all around scum bag Jeff Simms down in Liberty City in Miami I wouldn't question your comments at all. Simms finally got his, after over a decade of , murder, robbery, assaults and only God knows what he got away with in his many prison stints. But someone finally caught him slipping. And made sure, unlike the many times he'd been shot or shot at before to finally do the world a favor and sent Jeff Simms to hell. Simms got caught with only his fist in a gun fight. Flawless victory for the shooter...
Larry is indeed bitter at times for sure, however never heard of him doing anything like assault etc unless Trevor Berbick was involved. Plus always heard Holmes to be very approachable by fans etc
I share the feeling. What happened to McClellan was horrible, but somehow seems kinda karmic retribution. I can't shake the feeling soon or later McClellan was going to do even worse things than feeding a live pup to his fighting dog.
No doubt. He got his final tastes of the game when his own dog got hurt, and he fled from one of the rings. But at the end of the day, it just seemed like he hadn't given up enough to the hands of fate, and so they took more. Someone should've gotten a hint when he said that getting a knockout in his mind was akin to the euphoria felt when having sex.
Btw... Always baffles me how Liston is seen by some boxing fans. Sure he was a thug, was connected the mafia and involved in petty crime, like lots of poor young blacks. On top of that Liston looked ugly and menacing, fitting the big bad black man sterotype. But as far as I know Liston didn't kill or **** anybody. Maybe it is an image issue. Floyd Patterson also was involved in juvenile crime and everybody goes like he was Mr. Clean, while Liston gets the short end of the stick. Maybe I am missing something?
It's definitely horrible that the sort of racist stigmas found back then are still somewhat prevalent now amongst our own community. Even sixty years later he just can't catch a breather. It breaks my heart to see that sort of stuff, or even hear how everything was during his reign as champion, because when you really just look at him as a whole, you see this beautiful man that got dealt the worst cards possible, and even when trying to escape, and succeeding, he couldn't win. R.I.P. Charles "Sonny" Liston
