Ive just seen this now,it took until the bottom of page1 for Burley to get mentioned, he was the first that came to my mind

 

I think Elmer Ray was well avoided during his era.

Wilfredo Gomez at 122, Napoles at 140 and Carlos Monzon. This really hurt Napoles because he got avoided by all the champions till he was 29.

 

in recent years, Roy Jones.

 

Juan Manuel Marquez....the avoided one at 126 lbs.

Had it not been for the greedy Murad Muhamad who was Pacquiao's promoter back then going against Freddie Roach's wishes and signing Pacquiao to fight Marquez after Pacquiao had just dominated Barrera, Marquez may very well never have gotten his opportunity to fight within the upper echelon.

 

Cant believe jones keeps getting mentioned. Talk about the most cherry picked pathetic ring career of the modern era (which is pretty bad considering cherry picking is the norm these days). Jones was the antithesis of this thread, a guy who was made to look THAT GOOD based on his SELECTED opponents and not that he was so good he made good fighters look bad. If thats the case he wouldnt have spent most of his career ducking challenges and fighting men who were literally part time boxers.

 

Marvin hagler for me from his Antufermo fight onwards he was pretty much unstoppable !

 

this post is ridiculous. how does someone that cherry picked opponents their entire career get to be voted fighter of the decade? how was he at the top of the lb 4 lb list for the better part of a decade?

who exactly did he duck? (please don't list steve collins) there wasn't really anyone that would beat much less compete with him at 160-168. dariusz was a worthy opponent but he was more interested in pulling a calzaghe with his career than fighting the best. jones moved up to beat ruiz but he made it look so easy that he didn't get the credit he deserved. can you imagine if calzaghe had moved up and beat ruiz for a heavyweight belt? joe's supporters would claim it was one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of the sport.

my point is jones is judged differently than anyone else from his era, and it's because he was TOO good.
