In other words, very very "padded" records.

Buck Smith has a record of 179-19-2, with 120 KOs (similar to Ray Robinson's record), but was a fringe contender/journeyman.

Smith was not the only Julio Cesar Chavez victim with a remarkable record on paper. Marty Jakubowski has a record of 114-7.

Brian Nielsen retired with a 64-2 record.

    Don't hate me.....

But it was very late in the record of Marciano that he started beating solid champs and name fighters.. There was no Larry Holmes type of long list of title defences.. Just an immaculate preserved record..

from a british view we had a boxer called george boy collins who was 36-0 and had not even fought above area welterweight title level.
    warren promoted

as soon as he stepped up he lost twice and retired.

Nope, I couldn't disagree with you on that...when he did step up to championship level he beat all of them, but Rocky did fight a lot of also-rans getting there. This isn't unfair, it's just how it is.

First name I thought of - 'Wimpy' Halstead, 84-19-1, journeyman to the stars in the 80s and 90s.

Paul Spadafora? Mario Veit has a good record, Sven Ottke obviously.

What about the reverse? Very good fighters who have rather poor records? Glen Johnson for example? 12 defeats on his record but a great fighter.

No matter what ... the record grants respect ... especially considering that he has a championship strap.

You have to respect that power ...
