Before the super middleweight division was created in the 80's. Who would have benefitted from having a 168 lb division if it was one of the original weight classes?
I would add Gene Fullmer....he was a tank. Of course Harry Greb & Mickey Walker both went up and down thru that weight range. And maybe Carlos Monzon would have gone up in the mid-70's and took that title too.
How many do you want in the time available? Tommy Burns (hell he would probably still be champion now) Sam Langford (if god forbid, he ever got to fight for a title) Dixie Kid Philadelphia Jack O'Brien Jack Dillon Jack Delaney SMW is pwehaps the most justified of the new divisions. It has always been well populated by talent. There is a band of fighters who were great midleweights and light heavies who would have had a shot at being the best ever at 168.
i do dispise those people who have disdain for the non original wieghts. who have only respect for the original 8 wieghts. the super-middlewieght division was a needed division. people like dick tiger who just couldnt make middlewieght but was way too small for light heavies would of enjoyed a 168 pound division.
Honestly, there are fighters in need of EVERY division and even if only a dozen men benefit from one of the newer divisions, than why not? Not too difficult to work out a catch weight fight, choose WHAT division you prefer, and so on. What's the harm of them?
