We've had threads about fighters who we came to appreciate more over time, but are there any fighters who you've come to think less of -- either in terms of "greatness" or ability -- as you've read more about them or watched more of their fights? If so, who and why?

    JMM.

After the blatant PED use for his final fight with Manny, it's a tainted win IMHO.

JMM came out looking like a Mexican version of The Incredible Hulk. Absolutely COVERED in acne (who gets acne at that age?) and has a bunch of well known cheats in his corner.

"Oh, I look in great shape because this is the first time I've had a strength & conditioning coach.." were more or less his words when asked about his transformation. He knew damn well what he was doing. Just look at how he looked in his previous fight compared to the fourth encounter with Manny.

Honestly, F*ck that guy. I still admire his displays of skills AND guts in other fights like the Diaz, Katsidis, Manny fights. But that last showing? PED's were in play, anyone who knows anything about them or s&c knows that.

Good question, btw. One which I don't think we see enough of!

James Toney (one of my favorite fighters but too inconsistent in his prime)

Jack Johnson (a true ATG but I've grown less convinced that his style and skill set would serve him well in h2h matchups with later fighters)

Jim Corbett (his record and his fight footage don't support the mythology)

Max Baer (was astonished by his crudeness when I finally got around to watching his fights)

    Jim Corbett.

His record seems to hang on draws, and losing performances where he was ahead.

That increasingly doesn't cut it, after 100+ years of great heavyweights.

It is only fair to say however, that his pre title record might well be getting sold short.

I'd put Hopkins in the mix, too.

His "10 year run undefeated" isn't that good. When he lost, he lost the rematch as well.

He's got some good wins although I've never seen him beat a quality technician his own size.

My appreciation for all boxers has only increased over time.

I've come to learn that all the guys with reputations deserved it.

Anyone who doesnt hold fighters pre-1930s in lower regard to post-1930s has big problems in the head

Hi, sorry don't want to start an argument but I don't get what you're saying about SRL at all. He beat Hearns and Benitez when they were in their primes, avenged a defeat to Duran when RD was still an elite fighter and then in his first fight at MW beat the lineal, undisputed champion who hadn't lost a fight in 11 years and was coming off wins over Hearns, Mugabi and Duran.

Floyd.. handpicking a guy who never fought a boxing match and having an experiment yet earning 100 million dollars.. and he always handpicked. I never liked it. making Canelo lose to weaken him.

Riddick Bowe. I was a big fan when Bowe was an amateur and I followed his entire pro career. When he won the title, I thought he was going to be something special.

Then he dropped a belt rather than fight Lewis. Then he lost control of his weight and lost the rematch with Holyfield. The fouling of Buster Mathis. Punching Larry Donald at the weigh in. Getting absolutely destroyed by Golota twice, a man who really wasn't a great fighter at all.

Then he retired, joined the Marines, quit within days, then kidnapped his wife with a knife and threatened to kill her. The prison stint. The miserable return. Today, he still posts tweets to Lennox Lewis trying to get him to stage some pathetic old-timers fight.

When I do see video or read something about him, it's usually embarrassing.

I'm kind of sorry now I was ever a fan. Like Tyson Fury would later do, Bowe sort of went off the rails after winning the title.

Like ingemar Johansson, I don't believe he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame based on his career as a whole. Probably should have six losses (to Holyfield, Tubbs, to Mathis Jr., Zumbrun, and two to Golota). But the judges (against Tubbs and Zumbrun), the ref (against Mathis) and Golota himself (in their two meetings) bailed out Bowe.

A 39-6 record probably doesn't get him anywhere near the Hall ... and it's actually a more realistic representation of his record.

My appreciation of past greats has certainly escalated over time. I despised Ali and SRL as I watched most of there entire careers and I despised them for the wrong reasons. Today I find my opinions much less tainted and I only go with what I technically see.
