Oscar as well, derailed so bad he didn't even make it to your list.

This was Oscar's last fight while in his prime. Get's ko'd then retires. When he comes out of retirement we saw an Oscar slow on his toes, his punches aren't as fast or straight. The Oscar that returned to face Mayorga isn't the same that faced Hopkins. Just check the two fights out back to back for what I'm talking about.

True, so long as he fights the little guys. Calzaghe's his daddy.

True but to be fair he didn't look all that good facing Sturm either.

Tarver:huh? The same can be said for Hagler & Monzon. Napoles have to move up to face Monzon & Hearns had to move up to face Hagler. As far as Calzaghe, HIS daddy was telling him he was losing against Hopkins.

I've always wondered what would happen if Hopkins was ever in the same weight class as Floyd.

:lol: I remember that. The look on Calzaghe's face after that final bell went, screamed the words "****. I think I've lost it."

Yes, he was undefeated at the time. But his career wasn't derailed as he did great things AFTER the loss. But it's still a great win for Hopkins. Giving Glen Johnson his first loss.

I think more than anything, it's his mastery of the sport. At least in the later stages of his career. His ability to control the pace of the fight and maintain the distance that's best for him. He controls the fight. He's either inside and beating you up or outside outboxing you. His opponents have no answer.

And he doesn't really beat you up (again, talking about the later stages of his career) but he just completely outboxes and outclasses you. So mentally, that has to be hard to take for a supposed "elite" fighter to know that he was completely outclassed. If this "elite" fighter was outclassed so badly, what is he now?

bernard didn't ruin fighters, he simply fought fighters at ridiculous weights where all the cards were stacked in his favour (bar tarver).

here is bernard hopkins best 6 wins broken down, take away the smoke and mirrors, the hbo and ring magzaine brainwashing and this is what your left with :deal

    trinidad
    prime weight = welterweight (147)
fought hopkins at middleweight (159)
trinidads record at middleweight or above from hopkins onwards = 2 wins / 3 defeats

    winky wright
prime weight - light middleweight (154)
fought hopkins at - 170 lbs
in 57 fights, the hopkins fight was the only fight that wright had weighed over 160 lbs (a full 10lbs difference) :rofl

    de la hoya
    prime weight - welterweight (147lbs)
fought hopkins at - middleweight (160lbs)
de la hoya only fought twice in his career at middleweight out of 45 fights -1 win / 1 loss - the win was a very debatable decision over eurobum felix sturm

    pavlik
prime weight - middleweight (160 lbs)
fought hopkins at - 170 lbs
in 34 fights pavlik had only fought 2 minnions at the beginning of his career at 169. all pavliks fights since hopkins have been at the 160 limit.

    tarver
    prime weight 175
great 2 weight jump from hopkins and his best win despite tarver being a b-level fighter and going 3 wins / 3 losses from hopkins onwards.

    johnson
prime weight -super mid / light heavy (162 to 175)
fought hopkins at - middleweight (160)
    johnsons record at 160 + from hopkins onwards - 19 wins / 14 defeats / 2 draws
the defeats have come against people of the level of ottke, woods, shieka, gonzales, harmon, branco, vanderpool, Kiwanuka, sosa :rofl

then throw in hopkins 4 defeats to the only top class fighters he ever fought at a fair weight (jones, calzaghe, and taylor twice) and you get a true reflection of the career of bernard hopkins :deal

Not his best win but a great accomplishment. Pavlik or Trinidad is his best win especially since he fought Pavlik better than Taylor(Don't forget, Taylor-Pavlik II was fought at a catchweight) and fought Trinidad better than De La Hoya. And speaking about his career, 20 title defenses at MW nuff said. Still props to you for giving Hopkins a little credit. Thought I'd never see the day lol.

bigtime B-Hop myself but wouldn't you say that Tarver, Wright and Trinidad were all past their peaks anyways and on the downward slide of their careers? You could argue that they were all just getting old and shopworn and regardless of who they fought they would have been on that downward slide at that point in their careers.....

Well Tarver was coming off from some of the biggest victories in his career(Jones,Johnson), Trinidad was undefeated and coming off from a Ko/Tko streak, and Wright just demolished Ike and had victories over Mosley & Trinidad not too long before fighting Hopkins so I'd say all of them were looking good previous to facing Hopkins. You can argue that they were getting older but I wouldn't consider any of them declining before facing Hopkins. Wright did have a war with Taylor but that didn't ruin him.
