Fighters whose popularity personality, and overall presence, belies their actual boxing ability?

It's surprising that Holyfield, who is older than Mike and started earlier, didn't dominate this weak era. It's surprising that Frank Bruno, who was beaten three times in the 1980s, didn't become champion until the mid-1990s, clearly past his prime, just like George Foreman.
It's also strange that Larry Holmes didn't capitalize on this era's weakness by losing his titles and appearing finished during the Tyson era, only to suddenly re-emerge after turning 40 in the 1990s.
It seems that the 1980s were weak only for Tyson, but the 35-year-old Holmes couldn't hold the title, and the 37-year-old Foreman was ridiculed.

Tyson is the best ever. His issues outside the ring affected his career.

 

Did Ali even actually refer to himself as the greatest in the 70's though, maybe after he whooped Foreman, but by the time his presence was winning fights he was pretty much over it himself

The thing with Tyson was he was basically a machine that could only perform at its best with Cus/Rooney pulling the levers, no matter how high performance 88 Tyson was the whole thing had a one dimensionality to it, a technical masterpiece that could perform one way and one way only

His issues out of the ring were almost entirely self inflicted as well. He was an idiot.

Ali was the greatest heavyweight in the best era for heavyweights, lightning fast hands and feet.
Had a lay off in perhaps his best years, came back having lost much of his speed and proved he was still the best and showed he had the best chin, heart and grit as well.
He was larger than life but his actual ability isn’t that far away from his legend. Maybe not the greatest boxer but certainly the best heavyweight.
