I read an interview with him in ring magazine About 35 years ago. His smoking habit was brought up by the interviewer and the photo showed him with a cigarette in hand. Monzon claimed that he only smoked when he wasn’t in training for a fight which may be true but I don’t know. As a former smoker myself I can tell you that stuff is addictive and it’s pretty much an all or nothing game. You either do it all the time or you don’t do it at all.

I didn’t know that but I imagine there were more boxers who were tobacco users than admitted

Was it later in his career or at his peak too? (When he fought Ali, Foreman, Norton and Lyle)

Ruiz Jr indeed achieved a lot and had fine career considering that he was morbidly obese since childhood.

That's crazy to think about considering how sharp his defensive work was.

Carlos Ortiz had pretty good longevity for his times, no? He was into alcohol too. In some interview I saw He said He was drinking whiskey after training and before sleep.

LOL! I don't know about that, but it sounds good. It reminded me of an old Benny Hill skit where he was some sports reporter saying, "And Rocky said his career has improved since giving up the smokes, the drink and the women...especially between rounds."
