I remember reading an article years ago where a writer mentioned the 3 most well-balanced fighters he had ever seen. And he named Sugar Ray Robinson, Jose Napoles and Rodolfo Gonzalez. I also recall in the same article Gonzalez absolutely tickled over the company he was mentioned with.
Holyfield, Beterbiev, SRL, Duran, JCC, Ali, Tyson, just to name a few. Most of the top guys keep/kept their feet under them, that's a big reason they are/were on top.
It has to be Pernell Whitaker or Jones Jr. Their styles were actually based on excellent balance and quickness....
There's no fight i've scored more often. The best I can do is this. Unuargable Hopkins rounds: 1,2. Rounds I'd expect to see for Hopkins on a good card: 3 Unarguable Calzaghe rounds: 4,5,8,9,11,12. Swing rounds: 6,7,10 So if you give Hopkins all the swing rounds, you can score it for Hopkins. What I find myself coming up with most often is 6 and 7 for Calzaghe and 10 for Hopkins.
Most of the time. On the night I was 114-113 Calzaghe. I've never produced a card for Hopkins. There was an offshoot forum where they did a really deep dive on the fight and they came up with a card for Hopkins but they were working really hard.
It certainly rubber stamps Joe as one excellent fighter because even past peak and up in weight Hopkins was on one helluva little streak and absolutely whooped Pavlik just after. We also know he was hell for southpaws.
Hopkins was a master at taking away an opponents strength. Take a look at these punch stats of his fight with Tarver. Tarver was a massive favorite going into that fight but BHOP had a brilliant game plan. Tarver, being a southpaw would always take parry a conventional fighters jab and land that counter left that was devastating. So how did Hopkins counter that? He simply didn't throw jabs and focused on lead right hands and check hooks. Check out the punch stats below. Have you ever seen a fighter win a 12 round decision with only 7 landed jabs? BHOP was one of the most complete fighters ever. He simply just found a way to win. https://www.*******.com/page/compubox_hopkins_wright_stats
Oh man consider me on board. Also not only did he win the decision but he won it easy - he schooled him.
“He has balance after using his left, or right, his judgment of distance is remarkable, and I believe he is the best 'balanced' fighter in the world today. If he misses with one hand, he is always in a position to punch with the other. He is the greatest puncher in the world BARRING NOBODY, and is NEVER out of position" ~ Jack Blackburn in the lead up to his 21-year old prodigy Joe Louis' coming out party against the giant Italian former World Champion Primo Carnera in 1935
