Fighters with surprising amount of Fights of the Year

Ali's had half a dozen of them.

 

Gene Tunney, being a scientific fighter having 4 of them is interesting but every opponent was uber aggressive which made for some top tussles.

 

Ortiz may be a quitter but he was exciting. The Berto and Maidana fights were wars.

Whats even more surprising is none of Wilfredio Gomez's CLASSICS were ever named FOTY.

 

George Foreman was in four: Joe Frazier I, Muhammad Ali, Ron Lyle, Jimmy Young

Micky Ward was in three in a row from 2001-03: Emanuel Augustus plus Arturo Gatti I and III

 

The fact that none of these fighters listed have 1 FOTY is really surprising considering their exciting styles and the classic fights that they’ve all been involved in.

It was always weird to me that Pryor-Arguello 1 wasn’t given FOTY by The Ring for 1982 - that honour went to Chacon-Limon 4 - but The Ring named Pryor-Arguello their fight of the decade for the 1980s…

 

I’m still not even sure which is the best fight of the last couple months of 82’.

We had those 2 and Gomez-Pintor

 

I was at that fight. The crowd was electric.

 

His fights with Marcos Maidana and Josesito Lopez are quite entertaining but sadly they are mostly remembered for Ortiz choosing to quit in those fights. 2 action fights ruined with an anticlimactic ending.
