I have always rated Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali ahead of Rocky Marciano. So whilst I defend Marciano, is that really over rating him? I simply won’t entirely discount his...or any great fighters chances...in any fantasy fight. Especially against mere contenders of later eras. I possibly rate Larry a bit too high. Certainly higher than some do. Because, like Sonny Liston, it could be argued that he didn’t quite beat EVERYONE within his era to establish quite the dominance I can attribute to him.
I have re-edited this. do you think defending someone amounts to over rating them? Perhaps this might be what confuses you?
To be fair, it was better than my initial expectation that he was going to name Williams as a fighter he overrates
Took you a while chok but the association with Liston is not comparative. I can only assume you are talking Ingo which won't hold much weight.
No, definitely not. I don't think they're one and the same, but I definitely think they stray into the same areas. For example, saying Marciano beats someone like Witherspoon isn't something I'd recoil at. That's defending him. Whereas, saying he beats someone like Foreman, or Tyson, or Liston, etc; is where I recoil and think that's ridiculous. Which, is firmly in the overrating him category.
If somebody outright starts a thread to trash Marcianos (or any great fighters) chances against a Foreman or a Liston or even the contenders ike Ibeabuchis and Cleveland Williams, is coming to the defence of Louis or Marciano in these situations really over rating them? I have never started a thread with “Marciano beats Ibeabuchi” or “ Bowe beats Joe Louis” but on such threads I have defended both making a case where they should not be dismissed. And that is as far as it goes.
