In boxing for me it’s the misty past’s boxing hero’s - those guys with all those almost fictional though historically factual feats from the Langford era. This content is protected
Tbh, I’m surprised the thread wasn’t immediately closed upon this truly elite nomination. ‘Nuff said, really. John Ruiz “The Nonpareil”.
He is very much to blame for the proliferation of threads telling us why Roy Jones Jr. would beat this, that and the other ATG HW from the past - and even some in Roys’s present too. Unforgivable Skillessness. Get on to it Ken Burns.
What most people forget or overlook is that Max Schmelling was the man of courage and character in that contest. Schmelling lived in Nazi Germany and refused to join the Nazi party. Schmelling risked his life to save Jewish children in 1938. Despite his clear disdain for the Nazis, Schmelling served as a paratrooper during the war. After the war, Schmelling became a successful business man and paid the hospital bills for Louis on at least one occasion. Despite all this, Louis is portrayed as the hero and Schmelling the villain.
What did you expect though ? What Max did was only known decades after.... Joe Louis was a hero though, one of the most iconic americans in history, a good guy.
