Myself George Foreman.. bad decision that led to a good one. Lewis..It was definitely his time. Same for Joe Calgz Nigel Benn.. didn't want to see him getting hammered any more.
I was glad that Muhammad Ali lost to Trevor Berbick in spite of me being an out and out Ali fan. If he'd won he'd have probably got more seriously hurt along the line. Glad that fight taught him that his well had run dry. I was glad that Marvin Hagler got out when he did. He had slowed up a bit but there were no signs of him being shot or anywhere near it at that stage. Nigel Benn - Just like yourself,Fergy. He'd had more than enough.
Nice one Stevie. Yes the Ali ones always a bit emotional really. He was such a massive name for years and you really didn't want to see him hurt. The Holmes fight, bloody hell that was awful. So your right mate,if he beaten Berbick chances are he carried on. Can imagine him fighting a Mike Weaver next. That would have been horrendous.
I didn’t know you were a fighter Fergy? That said…as someone who has never boxed, it never occurred to me how many posters have been boxers.
No mate I've not boxed. I meant myself,my thoughts. But I think there is a fair few on here that laced up the gloves. We've probably all imagined it at one point lol
Hi Fergy. Yes, that was the plan I think - to fight Weaver. Yes at that stage of Muhammad's life it would have been terrible. And yeah, the Holmes fight was an obscenity.
For me the first Paz fight and the first Camacho fight was also good, but the Barkley fight ultimately set his greatest legacy so yeah,he def better to retire there.
All of them to be honest when it was obvious they were past there prime. Even the ones I didn’t particularly like because of their personal conduct. I never wanted to see any boxer seriously hurt in the ring, or take unnecessary damage because of their diminished skills.
Hi Buddy. Exactly, we are all familiar with the adage, the fighter is the last to know, in a parallel universe it's easy to understand why the boxer wants to keep on fighting when long past his best, the adulation, pure and simple, lots of back and forth whether it's the money or fame, for me it isn't about the money as much, many a champ has had his title taken away, but continued to fight on in meaningless and futile fights, for far less money then they were commanding as the champ, as a champ you are somebody, looked up to, admired, invitations are many, your presence is sought, you are elevated above mere mortals, then boom !!! your dressing room is less crowded all of a sudden, the usual throng of newspaper men are now in your conqueror's room, the whoops and cheers are heard along the corridor, they sound familiar, but with a different name being exulted, the bruises and cuts for some strange reason take longer to heal as an exchamp, the few remaining people that are up a still around have long sad faces, most looking at the floor when asked what your future is, the press are told you will have a rest and think about your future, I mean you are not old, and there's the rub, what else do you know, this boxing lark has been your life, started when you were a young kid, when the morn breaks after a sleepless night for the first time in years you do not rush to the sports pages of the local rag, you feel strange, something is missing, then it hits you, but wait a minute, what if you had trained that little bit harder, maybe it's time to ditch your trusted team, they obviously gave you bum advice, all the friends and family that are pleading for you to retire don't get it, after all, who is the best position to determine whether to fight on or not, you of course......... stay safe guys, chat soon.
