Me too. Though I feel he did deserve it. It took a real middleweight to knock him out of his complacency.
I never really saw him fight too much besides the contender, and he's not really a big fighter, but I gotta say Brian Vera has some of my respect now. Watching him run his mouth to Jaidon on the contender then getting destroyed, I thought he was a punk. But I was at the Vera-Lee fight and like everybody gave him no shot. And man, he took some shots and even got KD, but kept coming and coming and you can tell he wasn't gonna let up.
Ali: I was about 8 years old @ the time of FOC. I never saw any of the big fights (closed circuit) and only some of his lesser fights were on TV. I thought, "What's the big deal?, he's not so great and he's got a big mouth." Thought he'd get smashed by Foreman but he somehow won, everyone talked about the rope a dope like it was cheating. I started rooting for him around the time he was way past it, right around Leon Spinks. Over the years they started televising his big fights and I started to finally see him in the big fights and it totally changed my mind. When I finally saw the Foreman fight I couldn't believe the punishment that Ali took. Noone seemed to mention that when they complained about the rope a dope. Then I saw the Thrilla in Manilla, serious gut check time. Anytime people bring up great fighters, Roy Jones for example, I compare their fights to Ali's and he always looks fast, unique, thoroughly modern, and still The Greatest.
i lost a lot of respect for zab after the tzyu knockout, and i was ready to give up on him after the baldomir and mayweather fights, but i have to respect him for standing in and taking the well-deserved beating from cotto.
Hopkins- got my respect after dismantling Tarver Casamayor- Props for winning a tough fight against Katsidis
forgot about casamayor. he earned a lot of respect from me after the katsidis fight. i still can't stand him or his fighting style though.
when zab was unbeaten and destroying people, i couldn't wait for him to lose... i was among the people that were very happy when tszyu put him in his place... but it's weird, since then, the more he loses, the more i respect him especially his first fight against spinks (when he lost but put in a game effort) and his recent loss to cotto where i saw his huge heart on display for really the first time... he took a beating and would've kept taking it except for the ref
