Alexandru Benone Ciupitu vs. Stevens Bonicel, 6 rounds @ super middleweight

First bell delayed because apparently neither man's gloves are taped up adequately.

 

Ciupitu left just shadowboxing and stationary jogging in his own corner while Bonicel's mitts are yanked off and hands re-wrapped from scratch on the ring apron. The ref and emcee both look bewildered and embarassed by these hijinks.

Round 1

Ciupitu is gliding laterally around the ring, using quickness to keep Bonicel lunging and missing. Ciupitu feeding him jabs and single right hand leads while circling. A semicircle being cut repeatedly as Ciupitu uses the same two corners of the ring, stopping on a dime and reversing with a double jab into Bonicel's face. Ciupitu is scoring very often with the long jab and keeping himself at range, denying the Frenchman many touches at all.

They have ugly records (Ciupitu 5-5 and Bonicel 6-3) but neither has ever been stopped. They also have only three stoppage victories between them - Ciupitu one and Bonicel two.

Guess we're strapped in for a hard eight, barring a cut.

 

Bonicel had more luck getting inside and working the body in the second, but ate some big counter left hooks on the jaw for his troubles.

20-18 Ciupitu

 

Third was an out and out war. Bonicel ate plenty of leather to get there but did some damage on the inside. Best shot of the round was Bonicel lunging with a right hand catching Ciupitu leaning against the ropes.

29-28 Ciupitu

 

Bonicel sustains a bad cut a minute into the fourth. Corner of his right eye.

He goes ballistic when they call time in, perhaps realizing his time is short before the doctor calls it off.

Good fifth round for Ciupitu, back on the jab, and working the body inside from a tight shell.

Nice job being done keeping a lid on Bonicel's cut despite the bad placement.

48-47 Ciupitu

 

Seesaw battle.. 6th got a bit chippy with some hits on the break and forearms on the inside. Ciupitu might be gassing out, getting outworked as Bonicel rips uppercuts and hooks despite the reopened cut.

57-57

 

Lights in the arena blink out a minute into the seventh. Both combatants smile and touch gloves instead of going for a cheap shot. Ref sends them each to a neutral corner to wait for pugilistically appropriate levels of illumination.

 

They resume and not thirty seconds later the lights flicker ominously again. PAY THE BILL!
