Hi guys, I would like to know how do you fight against someone who sticks behind his jab? What kind of strategies do you use to get him to infight and work on your punches?
slip it and counter (do both in same time ). to do this you need timing, to find right timing you have to find opponents rhytm. If you cant find it, always do defenses, even if you are not in range, that will make him gun shy and then its your time to attack. There is many ways, the best thing is experience, many rounds of sparrings to exactly know what to do in what situation. I gave you only few ways
You can do a couple things, both of which require getting him to either commit to and step with his jab, or to get him to throw something else at you. If he is jabbing and stepping away, maintaining that distance, it is hard to get to him. Also, if you are catching or otherwise making him miss all his jabs, that is all he is going to do. Jab and step away. So give him a little bit- Jake LaMotta used to do this- maybe off the top of your head, lean in so he thinks he's getting some, or maybe be out at the end when it 'hits' you, to get him stepping a bit more. Once he starts stepping... Slip inside, step in with a straight right to his heart, under his jab. Now you are inside. Or parry his jab over your left should and bring your left hand up from under- a straight left hand from the hip as you push off the right foot. The whole key is to get him to step in, not away.
The jab - most important punch in boxing. If you can't land your jab, it will be a lot harder to land anything else. Even Mike Tyson worked behind his jab. Use your jab to get inside. Try catch/parry jab. Or triple jabs to get inside.
Be first. Move your head irregularly so he has to time you. This will put him one step behind you and actually physically slow down his reflexes. The irregular movement is the key. Don't just move it left-right-left-right all the time. Switch it up. Left-right-right-left, etc.. Also, move it up and down too. This adds more choices for him to consider while he's trying to time you. After all, jabbers also have to use timing to jab accurately. And you have to do this while stepping forward or backward depending on the distance the jabber maintains. Also, each slip should put you into punching position for a counter left or right. So pulling away from a jab is waste of time cos you didn't put yourself in a position to counter. Always slip left or right and get under the jab and counter.
Watch Joe Frazier. He is very successful at it. He just kind of ducks his head with a curve in his back like you are going to pick up something, and pops up with a hook. It is an EXTREMELY effective style against jabbers. Best of all it requires little timing that other methods do, because you just duck down when you see the jab, even if he feints it doesn't matter just keep bobbing down, and bend your knees just like frazier so you get even lower, then he'll have to come down a bit to try to jab you, and when you get close enough, bob down, jump up and nail him with everything. Watch that knockdown where frazier lands on Ali. It is the ideal way. Guy throws a jab, you duck under pop up and nail him with a vicious left hook with the kitchen sink on it. It also is effective for preventing hooks. The other style is to turn square, as jabbers usually turn their should to you, and when he throws that jab move your head to the left and counter with a flying left hook forward. You can also move sideways or just turn sideways and throw an overhand right over the jab.
