There have been many instances when a boxer hurt their hand and continued to win the match. Even with an injured arm Pascal won in a recent match. One would think these injuries would be so prohibitive that your opponent can exploit with ease, but apparently not. As a comparison to other sports, if you have a broken hand or arm you don't play partly because you won't be competitive at all. Could it be that boxing is not really a fine tuned sport like say baseball or basketball?
Bradley beat Pacquiao with 2 broke ankles. ATG status, Bradley the legend killer, then went on to box the HGH out of "Pacquiao killer" Juan Manuel Marquez after suffering "drain bamage" from the Provodnikov fight.
Fighting with a taped hand covered with wraps and a glove one is still able to hit...throwing a baseball is irrelevant to the what it is to be a fighter.Shooting hoops and trying to knock someone out isn't even comparable. The mechanics in boxing where hands are protected is the difference and requires less accuracy than making 2 pointers which does require better accuracy so an injury is going to effect a sport that needs more precision to compete in.boxing you don't have to be pin point accurate to win, hitting someone in the general area is not the same as trying to get a ball inside a net it barley fits in.No other sport is really as fine tuned like any combat sport when you add in how much of a chess match it is,the difference is you can fight injured without having to be perfect to win,the slightest angle of missing a basket or strike..etc is determined by the accuracy you have...fighting is to, but a punch will land on a target regardless.
Froch fought Pascal with a perforated ear drum and cracked rib yet said nothing and gave Pascal his due credit. He suffered them in sparring but feared divulging them because it was his first title fight and he didn't want to risk it being called off or Pascal being armed with this knowledge obviously.
That's another good example. I just don't see how in other sports with the same injury they with come out ahead.
So why can't the healthy opponent exploit the boxer favoring his injured hand or arm. I am sure they can in other sports and that's why they don't play.
Fighters usually don't show sighns of injuries.Usually after the fight one learns who broke or fractured what, not during. Its not a team sport you just cant take a boxer out of the game and replace him .
The only thing Bradley beat up in the fight were those ankles. He didn't beat Pac. Let's please stop suggesting he did. It's as bad as people saying Manny beat Floyd.
Players play injured in basketball, but there are doctors there to give cortisone shots during games, stitches at halftime. They have a lot more options. Plus, they can rest for two-three quarters before going in and doctors can do work during that time. Boxing is really difficult. It's a really tough situation to be in. I mean, you're screwed. Reason why these dudes are fighters and not just on the boxing aspect. They're warriors in more ways than one and are good at concealing the injury or at least putting it at the back of their mind. Reason why it's less noticeable. So much adrenaline is going at that time too
Lets put it in another way. If a boxer breaks his hand that in itself could make him 85% never could he be performing at 100% regardless how he is able to hide the injury. The matter becomes worst if his opponent catches on and your performance level drops to 70%. My point is in most sports if you are performing at 70% you wouldn't be able to compete maybe at 90% you could, but not at 70%.
Right, I am sure the dislocated shoulder effected Williams movement in the ring greatly and make one side of his offense passive. This is a major advantage to an opponent in any sport and should have tipped the competitive balance to Potter.
Jeffries and (I think it was) Corbett fought through intense burns from lights that were too close to the ring. It was the first "quality production" of a filmed boxing match and they didn't know how the lighting would show up on film. The lights were too close to the ring and way too hot. Bob Fitzsimmons has a famous shoulder tear injury in one of his big title fight wins. Many fighters have broken noses and finished out a fight competitively. I would guess that is the most common big injury. Most fighters suffer some sort of inflammation or tweak in training going into their matches.
A fair comparison would be other 1 vs. 1 matches. Like tennis. Injuries cause match cancellations before and during the event all the time.
