a local world champion from hawaii named jesus salud was very good at countering off the ropes. reggie johnson, doung dewitt, franke swindell, bones adams, bronco mckart and a older larry holmes all used the ropes very well.
teeto as a fan of salud i would love to tell you about him:hat jesus salud was a felipino boxer that came to hawaii and was during the early 90's, the hero of hawaii in the trail of carl "bobo" olson, andy gannigan, ben villaflor and to proceed... brian viloria. salud was a physically strong counter punching fighter that led with his heart more then he had too and from what i heard, was badly managed. despite his challenges, salud shined with a dq win over juan jose estrada for the wba super bantamweight belt. he latter fought welcome nicita, kennedy mckninney, keven kelly, guty espadas jr. and marco antonio barrera. he beat guty and dropped decisions to kennedy, kelly, nicita and a corner retirement to barrera. salud was physically durable, fairly quick and could punch. kinda like a lousito espinosa in some ways.
Thanks for that i appreciate it. And now i remember where i read his name, Ring Magazine ranked him as one of Marco Antonio Barrera's best wins, in his top ten, that was a few years ago that issue, but i think it would remain. I never knew about his style though.
I'm not sure Jesus Salud was one of Marco's best wins, considering how advanced in age he was, but Barrera was ridiculously good that night. Possibly his greatest ever showing. Alongside, Morales, Hamed, and Sanchez. I always felt Benitez did a great job of fighting off the ropes when the opportunity arose. Barrera at 122lb, also, was great when fighting off the ropes. He'd always throw the left hook to the head, body, and then come back up top with a right hook. It was beautiful.
Yeah good one, i think maybe The Ring had it in their list for the performance then? I haven't seen it. Yeah Barrera was good off the ropes. I was a massive Barrera fan in his prime, my favourite fighter for many a year.
Whitaker rarely, if ever, fought off the ropes. He was one of the best at staying off the ropes, not fighting off of them. He preferred to use the ring to his advantage and fight off the backfoot. His elusiveness and jab made him nearly impossible to cut off and track down.
I just watched his fight against Barrera just two weeks ago, great performance by Barrera, i didnt know Salud was a good fighter.
